Southern Concrete Materials has been laying the foundation of our community since 1958 by supplying the area with ready mix concrete and other construction materials. Long before Interstate-40 wound through the mountains of Western North Carolina, Reed and Abee, Inc. began their ready-mix concrete business in Asheville. In 1920, they founded the Oakley Construction Company and added construction to their services shortly after that. After nearly 40 years serving the region, Carolina, Reed, and Abee, Inc was acquired by the current company in 1958, and Asheville Concrete Materials, Inc. was well on its way. Much like the surrounding area, Asheville Concrete Materials, Inc. grew significantly over 25 years, expanding from one to 18 plants.

Concrete is a composite construction material composed primarily of aggregate, cement, and water. There are many formulations, each of which provides various properties. The aggregate is generally coarse gravel or crushed rocks such as limestone or granite, along with a fine aggregate such as sand.
