Services
For a number of years the Whitechapel Ltd telephone did battle with a shop full of woodworking machinery with no clear winner until sometime late in 1990 the telephone dealt its mortal blow and our furniture making days were over. As a furniture maker raised in England and taught my trade in that climate I have a bias in favor of the work produced from the mid 17th century up to the early part of the 19th century in England and America.

One of the best antique restoration hardware resources available. Fantastic catalogue! Coming back to antique restoration because of the current Covid shutdown of Broadway shows where I build scenery, , I am reminded of their excellent products as I find the exact replacement hinges for an excellent antique amoire that needs a door and hinge replacement.

Five stars for product quality for the price and for customer services at its best. When I called for assistance on product selection, Bob gave me incredible customer service. Their many peices of reproduction hardware I've ordered for myself and customers over the years are superb for the very affordable prices. The crab lock for reproduction blanket chests (SKU 178LF3) is a steal at its $95 price.

It compares favorably with a $500 hand wrought lock made by a world class blacksmith. There is a difference between the two, but the Whitechapel lock is perfectly fine for all but the most discriminating person. I called Whitechapel to ask about an iron escutcheon for the large key that comes with the lock. Bob told me he was going "downstairs" to check the lock key with the iron escutcheons that might meet my requirements to ensure the key would fit the keyhole. Bob called back in about 20 minutes with four escutcheons that meet my needs.

I ordered all four escutcheons plus a second lock to have on hand. The lock has a half inch of "travel" to allow for seasonal wood movement of a blanket chest lid - very generous and period correct. And, Whitechapel offers a discound for those of us "in the trade."

We bought an entire kitchen full of hinges from Whitechappel. In all, 45 hinges, at $17.00 per hinge = $765 worth of hinges. Most of the hinges were good. On some, the chrome is thin. On 7, the pins fall out of the hinge. The others are nice and tight. So, 15% of their hinges the pins fell out, 4% the chrome is thin. When I called to ask for replacements they said our cabinetmaker had put them in upside down. So, I guess some doors will have 3 knuckles, some will have two. Totally didn't stand behind their product. Stick with Baldwin.
