North America is fortunate to possess expansive forests that can provide the lumber used to support the United States' wood-based infrastructure. Yet while the supply of wood may be plentiful, it is not unlimited. KMG's wood treating chemicals significantly extend the lives of wood products used in industrial applications, increasing their lifespans not by a handful of years, but by multiple decades.
KMG's key product for the industrial wood treating market - pentachlorophenol - is commonly used in high-volume applications where preserving wood economically is a priority. According to industry statistics, there are more than 40 million wooden utility poles in the U.S. alone. Each year, electric power and telecommunications utilities purchase approximately four million wooden utility poles in the United States.
KMG is the sole supplier of EPA-registered pentachlorophenol (penta) in North America. Penta has played a critical role in the development of the nation's communications and electric distribution infrastructure. For approximately 60 years, penta has been used by power generation and telecommunications companies to protect their utility poles.
Since 1987, KMG has produced its wood treating chemical, pentachlorophenol (penta), in Matamoros. Built by KMG on 13 acres of purchased farmland, the plant lies outside the city of Matamoros. KMG employs over 50 people at its Matamoros facility and has been an important member of the Matamoros community for over a quarter of a century.

KMG is a niche chemical company, not open to the public and recently acquired by CMC for well over $1 billion dollars. The company culture at KMG is excellent and our leadership believes in investing heavily into the communities in which we operate. It is a premiere place to work with a casual, but diligent work atmosphere.
