In 1961, when Hiram Axtell died the family opted to sell the locations outside of Ames and Alfred "Fritz" Munn took ownership of the downtown Ames location. Alfred Munn passed away in 1985 and his son, Erik, is currently president of the company. Throughout the years Munn Lumber has expanded into hardware and do-it-yourself products to supplement its existing contractor business.

It's a solid lumber yard. The office staff are significantly better than at Lowe's, the other option in town. While working as a contractor I procured a variety of home building products. The staff in the yard are great. Very helpful in directing you to the right material bay. When you have a large quantity to load they are happy to lend a hand. The prices are reasonable for the most part, and better if you have a contractor account. The material selection is solid and they can order in what you need.
