If you enjoy being treated with disrespect this is the place for you! Enjoy being talked to with anger? Or watching the employees treat each other with the same arrogant jerkiness that they'll turn on you? Then go to Hayward Lumber! The lady at the front desk should be fired. We will be going elsewhere for the rest of our home remolding needs and in the future I plan to make it part of the deal with our contractor to never use them. Why support a business who thinks it's acceptable to treat customers this way.

Every time i go to this establishment there is one employee who quotes me at least 50% more on the price. I even leave and call and get someone else and the price is 50% less.either they have multiple prices depending on the type of buyer or the guy can't read. I am through with hayward lumber.

They charged me $64 a sheet for 1/2" osb plywood which should be cheap roofing plywood. I originally went to ace but they were sold out of 1/2" and their 3/4" osb was $32/ea. So I went next door to hayward. Their prices aren't marked and you only find out only when you ring out. $233 for 2 pieces of 1/2" plywood and 5 2x4s. (I called them to ask maybe there was some mistake.

They said they raised their prices due to covid. But they are double the cost of surrounding stores) Then when I sent my worker back to return the materials. They told me that even though we paid in cash they will only issue me a check for my $178 return. Any returns over $50 they only return checks. And they can either send it in the mail or let me pick it up in their office.

And if I pick it up, it won't be ready until the next day!. and now I have to wait a day to get the check and go out of my way to deposit it(plus a few days for bank processing) just to get returned the cash I spent on the spot.

I wanted to give a local business a chance rather than going to Home Depot. I wanted to build a bookcase. The guy at Hayward told me this was the wrong place for that kind of lumber. They just have Douglas Fir. And not in sizes suitable for bookcases. He said I would have to look downtown for hardwood. Seems a bit odd for a place with "Lumber" in their name to only sell one kind of wood?

And it turned out that Channel City Hardware a few blocks away in Goleta does indeed sell a variety of lumber suitable for bookcases. Maybe this place treats you OK if you are a major construction company. But they clearly are not interested in locals who are trying to do their own projects.

I absolutely love this place! It's a contractors paradise for materials! My father used to shop at Hayward's way back in the day, and nothing's changed. Great people, great service & great products.

This place is slowly becoming my favorite go-to spot even if I have 2 drive from miles away I'll do that instead of going to Home Depot because their customer service here is fantastic Home Depot sucks

I only went there out of convenience but the rude man hiding behind his computer and telling his workers to wait on somebody else as I'm standing there waiting for some time. And saying he doesn't know what I am or addressing like I'm ugly. A truly piece of. I feel sorry for his employees that have to be put up with that. I haven't been there in 30 years and I'll never ever go back again to be treated like that very disrespectful hardware store lumber yard. I hate to give the one star

Great store. Very friendly staff and real neighborhood hardware store feel. Plus they tolerated my roommate, who is the worst shopper in the world.

The best place in town for getting what you need to build. The prices are pretty marked up but their quality is good. The whole staff there make getting in and out quickly. The sheer size of the place enables them to provide you with basically whatever you could need.

Way expensive. Very busy. Edit after the vendor reply: I'm impressed there was an answer. If you really want to know where you can improve, consider this: one of your products I considered was twice as expensive as at other places. Another product (a special order) would take more than a week to get (as told by a sales clerk). City Lumber had it delivered in 48 hours. For less money. Anyway, thanks for responding and all the best.

If I could give a 1/2 star, I would. Not sure why you all have LESLIE working in your office. She is rude, unknowledgeable and not helpful at all. Every ime I call to get a price or see if you all stock something she asks me for your SKU number? I mean seriously how the heck am I supposed to know what Hayward's product number is? She talks over you when you are trying to explain what you need and keeps repeating the wrong info. From now on I am going to drive to Home Depot or M&S. Ridiculous.

Steve Haywood, owner of the store, has threatened to place a lien on our home under construction despite the fact that we are 100% paid in full for all materials purchased. When I questioned him about this, I learned that he applied my payments to a different overdue account under my contractor's name. I have a solid paper trail showing payment of each and every invoice we received.

We paid the contractor, they applied the funds to the wrong account. Despite my repeated attempts to get him to rectify this situation, I was told that they can't recover the funds from this other home owner so they are doing what they need to bring in the money! WHAT? What kind of business does this? Steve Haywood told me directly that he "has 2 kids in college and employee mouths to feed" and would do what it takes to recover his past due accounts.

Regardless of the fact that we are 100% paid in full! I am stunned, appalled and outraged at this business and would NEVER recommend using them for any type of project. If this is how they do business, stay away. Completely unethical. He needs to go after the customer who did not pay, or the contractor, but definitely not subsequent customers who paid in full to recover his losses.

This by far is the greatest lumber yard in California. Everyone there is so well versed in all building materials. They are very efficient and fairly priced given the location. It's definitely a perfect place to get all things you need to build, remodel, or repair a home, garage, shed, etc. These guys are way more effective than The Home Depot.

Worst Management ever. That Scott and Pat guy have no sense in customer service, they treat their employees like trash. Also the yard guy name Able. I don't know how they can have this guys there, worst customer service coming out of this guys. Never will I go back while this guys are there. Good Customer service starts with Management.

I am new to the area and so I asked a contractor who had been here many decades to tell me where I can buy lumber for projects. I prefer the smaller local mom-and-pop businesses over Home Depot because I appreciate customer service. But I have been disappointed time and time again when I walk in (or the phone rings and rings and rings and I don't get a human).

Today was the last straw. I stood at the counter with my items ready to purchase and 5 people behind the counter keep their nose in their paperwork, their eyes on the computer screen and completely ignored me. I had to announce to the five people behind the counter that I was ready to make a purchase before one of them looked up and asked me to walk over to him to make the transaction. I'm sure I would get better service and more attention at Home Depot at the same or better price.

Started a MAJOR remodel and my AMAZING contractor with KR Construction told me about Hayward Lumber. It is a quick drive from my house, always a plus but it's the employees that make it enjoyable to keep coming back. Sometimes several times in a day. Always helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. They already know my name. Oh, have to mention that their prices often bet other Monterey Peninsula lumber store.

I have pretty limited mobility, so I like to stick to smaller retailers. I'm very disappointed that none of the easier to access hardware/lumber stores in the area, including Hayward Lumber in PG, provide the simple service of making a straight cut on plywood purchased on site. No options or suggestions given, just a simple "we sell full sheets of plywood" period. I have a simple one liner too Hayward Lumber: "your crumby customer service lost you a customer".

I bought doors from them and they said they could deliver them on Friday. I didn't want to wait to have the factory cut the doors for installation BIG mistake. Only 2 doors made is on Friday and Karen the sales person said she emailed me Thursday night saying they needed to be back ordered She lied, she never emailed me that and why didn't she follow up with a phone call?

If I had known I would of had the doors cut at the factory and saved money on the installation. Bottom line the doors are still not installed and Willie Nelson, (manager) does not return telephone calls. Try someone else for doors. Their service sucks BIG ones!

I completely agree with you, Ron. The guys in the yard are always there when I need them. maybe it's because I'm a girl, but I do buy from them fairly frequently, as does my husband, and we both have had nothing but good experiences. Hayward has lumber you cannot get anywhere else on the peninsula. and it's of superior quality, unlike lumber at some "other wholesalers." Sure, if I wanted to drive to Santa Cruz or San Jose I could get a little better price, but I'm willing to pay more to have them right here in my own backyard.
