A baluster is a shaft that is usually molded or from a lathe-turned form, from one of various materials including wood, stone, concrete, fiberglass, plaster, and other composite materials standing usually on a bottom rail with a top handrail. Multiple balusters and rails form a balustrade system.
Specifically, it is the uppermost of the three principal members of the classic Entablature, which includes the Cornice, Architrave, and Frieze. The term is also employed for any projection on a wall that is provided to throw rainwater off the face of the building. In modern architecture, cornice is usually used for decorative reasons rather than functional.
A cupola is an ornamental dome-shaped structure placed in a prominent position on the top of a larger roof or dome. In some cases, the entire main roof of a tower or spire can be a cupola. More frequently, however, the cupola is a smaller structure, which sets on top of the main roof. A finial also referred to as a spire is a decorative feature that is typically employed decoratively to emphasize a cupola, dome, or roof structure.
A Dome is a roof circular or (rarely) elliptical in plan and usually hemispherical in form, placed over a circular, square, oblong, or polygonal space. Domes have been built with a wide variety of outlines and of various materials. Architectural Fiberglass, Inc., specializes in the manufacture of fiberglass hemisphere domes and onion domes for commercial and religious institutions. True hemisphere domes are basically a half of a ball or sphere where the rise or height of the dome is half of the diameter.
